About Me

I am Mike, a Pangasinense who grew up in Manila and took up BS Electronics and Communications Engineering at the Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT). I spent a few years working as an engineer, but later decided to pursue an I.T. career.

I spent most of my childhood in the urban jungle of Metro Manila. I did not really like to travel during those years because I easily get dizzy, even on short trips. Even when I started working, I did not entertain the idea of traveling. My travel experience was limited to mall hopping.

But then, I got assigned in Benguet last 2008, which forced me to travel 7-8 hours every weekend to go home to Manila. Because of this, I eventually I got used to long trips and that's when I began to embrace the idea of exploring the Philippines.

After a year, I discovered mountaineering and got hooked. I asked to be assigned in Davao City so I could climb Mt Apo and other mountains in Mindanao. Little did I know that Mindanao has a lot more to offer than just mountains. I stayed in Davao for almost 2 years and started venturing into photography before I moved to Cebu City in 2011, which allowed me to travel the Visayas region next.

I travel not only because I want to see different places, but also because I want to meet new people, try local delicacies and expose myself to different cultures.

I have traveled so much in the past few years that my friends in Davao and Cebu coined me with the term "Laagan", which means "traveler" in the Bisaya dialect, an explorer or someone who is always out; hence the name "Mike Laagan". Moreover, my friends also say that I look like a panda, which I now use as my "persona" here. And I actually have a stuffed toy named "Utazo" which also means "traveler" in Hungarian.

I started this journal in 2013, so I could share my travel experiences. Through this blog, I hope to be an advocate of Philippine tourism through my stories and photography.

Some like to travel and have the time but don't have the means.

Some have the means but don't have the time.

And some have the means and time but don't know where to go.

Which one are you?

I believe that the Philippines has a lot of well-known tourist destinations but here, I intend to explore beyond that by discovering other amazing places of our country.

Join me in my quest to EXPLORE offbeat destinations, to EXPERIENCE different cultures, and to ENJOY what life has to bring...

  1. Ah, such is the joy of traveling! I agree with the reason why you travel. I've always believed that traveling isn't just about seeing different places, rushing to cover places, and showing others what places you've been. It is about experiencing the place, the culture of its people, and enriching oneself, too, from the experience.

Good luck and keep on sharing your adventures.
