Shockwave Therapy by Peak Form

Have you heard about Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)? I came across this innovative method in search for a treatment to Plantar Fasciitis (severe heel pain), a foot injury that has bugged me for several months already.

Sometime in August 2014, I felt a sting on my right foot when I woke up. I can barely walk without feeling an excruciating pain in each step. Prior to that, I noticed that I easily get muscle cramps (even if I stretch properly) when going for a run. I ignored the pain and though that rest will be enough but after a week of agony, a visit to the hospital became imminent.

Renowned acupuncturist expert Dr Philip Niño Tan-Gatue discovered that I had Plantar Fasciitis and administered acupuncture treatment on my foot. Two days after, the soreness was gone and I could walk straight again. I never found the time to come back for another session and also thought that the single treatment was already enough since I did not feel any pain anymore (stubborn me).

Before 2014 ended, I experienced the same pain again and almost missed a trip. That prompted me to look for a solution, which led me to Peak Form, a recovery center that help athletes prepare for their sports activities and recuperate from post-training soreness, aches, and pains. They employ Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), the only non-surgical treatment approved for plantar fasciitis.

What is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)?

"ESWT is and effective treatment modality for plantar fasciitis pain which has been unresponsive to nonsurgical measures for at least three months with evidence suggesting significant pain relief for up to one year. Although there are some disputes to its medical value, its use continues to expand across medical disciplines, such as cardiology, urology (erectile dysfunction), kidney stones and wound applications."

The Therapy Session

The session started with a consultation with Drew (therapist). After discussing my concerns, Drew prepped me up and started to locate the painful spots and muscle knots in my body. Then he applied gel on the area that will be subjected to treatment.

Before the actual procedure, Drew explained to me that he will use the machine to puncture and disperse the muscle knots in my problem areas. He further added that it may hurt depending on my tolerance for pain. Watch the actual video of my therapy below:

Does it hurt?

The shockwave treatment can start at the lowest level and patients may ask the therapist to increase the intensity. Of course, the greater the intensity, the more effective the treatment is.

I actually asked Drew to begin from the maximum level and will signify if there is a need to decrease the intensity. I received treatment on each area for five minutes and did not have to adjust to a lower level the whole time.

After the therapy, Drew stretched every part of my body. He took the nozzle of another machine and used it to blow ice cold air into the areas he subjected to shockwave. This process called Cryotherapy, is an alternative to the messy ice bags used for cooling down muscles. Drew discussed that this technique is use to freeze and destroy abnormal skin cells that require removal.

The Verdict

I felt a big sign of relief after the shockwave therapy. He said that I may feel pain after a few days, but did not feel anything at all. My heels and calf feel great even after two weeks and I definitely will visit them again after a 4-week trip next month. I usually have a relaxing massage after a climb or backpacking trip to soothe my aching muscles, but it is never enough as they do not concentrate on the problem areas. Health is always a major consideration for travelers like me and with this innovation, recuperating from outdoor activities will be much easier.

I highly recommend Shockwave Therapy not only for athletes but for all people who experience soreness and pain accumulated from work or daily routine.
