Kanto Freestyle Breakfast Kapitolyo: Gourmet Need Not Be Expensive

I had the chance to try Kanto Freestyle Breakfast (KFB) in Mandaluyong last year with Ramil and Edgar of Pinas Muna and Rina of Simply Rins. We enjoyed the unorthodox food served in gourmet style, though we were not able to come back since going there is really quite an adventure. I was so glad when they opened up two branches before Christmas last year, gives me a chance to try their other bizarre dishes.

Last month, I finally had the opportunity to dine at their branch in Kapitolyo, Pasig. The new branch was far more accessible than the original eatery. It is also more secured since it is located in an enclosed space unlike the Mandaluyong branch which is your typical "karinderya" set-up beside a sidewalk. It may look unassuming since this was a garaged turned into a diner.

I asked four more friends, Ramil, Edgar, Francis of Pala-Lagaw and Zaide, one of the authors of Little Miss OZ Chinita and Blueclouds to join me in this food trip. The place was filled up even in the middle of the afternoon, so I had to wait before a table becomes available. In a little while, my friends arrived and we started our gastronomic adventure.

Hot Chocolate

Our early dinner started with three drinks. I was able to try the Hot Chocolate and Iced Coffee. Nothing fancy or extraordinary about the drinks, but still for the price, they were delicious.

Fish and Chips
Fish and Chips | Php 90.00

We had Fish and Chips to start our meal. The crispy fish fillet has a delicious dip that we had to ask for another serving so we could also dip the potato wedges. Yummy!

Tapsilog | Php 90.00

Pork Chop
Pork Chop | Php 90.00

KFB set meals comes with garlic rice, tomato pesto and 2 eggs freestyle (either sunny side-up or scrambled). Customers though have the option to choose what viand they want and what sides to come with it. We tried the the Tapa and Pork Chop set meals. The Tapa was tender and well-seasoned.

Sardines Eggs Benedict

Omelette on Toast

Kanto Super Club

Our next set of food came with either buns or loaf bread. I have tried sardines with mayonnaise on my bread, but this Sardines Eggs Benedict was quite different yet tasty. I agree with Francis that the omelette itself was already enticing. The toast, absorbed the juice from the eggs, making them a bit soft. Perhaps the bread can be arranged on the side. The typical club sandwich is filled with many fillings but Kanto Super Club is a combination of ham, cheddar cheese and french toast. Simple yet luscious.

Deep Fried Cloud 9
Deep Fried Cloud 9 | Php 50.00

Deep Fried Oreos
Deep Fried Oreo | Php 50.00

When I was younger, a bar of Cloud 9 chocolate would suffice for sweets. KFB found an ingenious way of eating this confection by wrapping it with crumbs before frying it. They did the same with Oreo cookies. Now, where can you find dessert at Php 50 bucks and taste this good?

Overall, this visit in Kanto Freestyle Breakfast's new branch in Kapitolyo was way much better than our Mandaluyong adventure. Our first try at the original branch got us lost along the way and wait for more than an hour since they had a general cleaning that day. We were able to try other dishes and are fully satisfied with what we had. I enjoyed the Tapsilog and desserts. I hope to visit the Libis branch and sample the other dishes I have not tried. Customer service is way better. Price is very reasonable, considering that all meals are less than Php 100 and served in gourmet.
