Mutya ng Nasugbu 2013

The Search for Mutya ng Nasugbu 2013 is one of the highlights of our 3-day trip in this quiet town of Batangas. The 32 candidates from the different barangays showcased their talents the previous night and on that night, one of them will be crowned as this year's Mutya ng Nasugbu. A short introduction by the new mayor started the festivities as she narrated how Nasugbu got its name.

Dance in Honor of St Francis Xavier

According to legend, a group of Spanish soldiers was allowed by their commander to go on a sightseeing tour of the friendlier villages on the western coast of Batangas. The group came upon a native couple cooking rice in a palayok (clay pot), the lid of which rattled over the steaming rice. In Spanish, the group leader asked the woman: "¿Cómo se llama este pueblo?" ("What is this place called?") The woman, who knew no Spanish, thought that the stranger was asking about her pot of rice. "Nasubo na po iyan, eh, kaya ganyan" ("The rice is boiling; that is why it is like that,") she replied. The Spaniard repeated the word "nasubo" and nodding his head towards his companions, introduced the word to them. The village henceforth began to be called by that name (taken from Wikipedia).

They were serenaded by the congressman of Batangas as everybody was awed by the hidden charm of the said politician. The top 15 candidates were then chosen and was asked to answer different questions each to gauge their intelligence. Then they were cut down to the final 5 contestants and were asked the same question. Each lady was asked to wear a headset so they could not hear the question as well as the answer of each candidate.

Mutya ng Nasugbu 2013 1st Runner-up Joycelyn Salamat

Joycelyn Salamat of Brgy Munting Indang was a crowd favorite because of her charm and eventually got her the Miss Photogenic Award as well as People's Choice Award. She also won for Best in Long Gown but I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting her to carry herself in a long gown even with short hair but she wore hair extensions. Nevertheless, she was still lovely and was judged 1st runner-up.

Mona Rose Bolintiam was my favorite. I admired the confidence and poise she displayed displayed all throughout the night. She was the most graceful candidate that night. She was Best in Beach Wear, Casual Wear and also had the best talent among the stunning beauties. In the end, she was crowned Mutya ng Nasugbu 2013.

It was a blissful evening not only for the the winning candidates but for Nasugbugueños as well.
