It was my third time to dine at Mesa and each meal was a different experience. This restaurant has modernized the way Filipino cuisine is prepared and served. I love this Filipino restaurant for the quality of food and good service. Another factor I appreciate about Mesa is the value for money and that they do not have service charge as most fine dining restaurants have. Honestly, I don't have the slightest idea why there is a service charge for restaurants when their food is already expensive. I am not ranting, just expressing my opinion.
I discovered Mesa after watching a movie with some friends in Greenbelt 3. This was the only restaurant that was full and customers were lining up to get a table. It was good we had the luxury of time and we were not that hungry yet, so I suggest to get a reservation if you plan to dine here. Their food is good for sharing for 3 to 5 persons.
Chicken Binakol | Php 210.00
I was able to try Chicken Binakol earlier this year when I went to Iloilo in celebration of their Dinagyang Festival and I also went Gigantes Island Hopping as the highlight of that trip. Chicken Binakol is similar to Tinolang Manok except that instead of water, fresh coconut juice and meat is used for cooking and it is served inside a coconut shell. The buko juice adds a bit of sweetness to this dish. Using native chicken gives this popular Ilonggo recipe more aroma and taste. I have tried the Chicken Binakol at other restaurants and Mesa is the only restaurant that I can say have perfected this.
Ginataang Sigarilyas | Php 190.00
One of the vegetables I like eating is "Sigarilyas" or winged seguidillas beans because of its nutritional value. I also love food that have "gata" or coconut milk. Put them together and I will probably pig out. The Ginataang Sigarilyas was really scrumptious if I were to describe it in one word. The right amount of spice gets this dish a thumbs up from me.
Sizzling Tofu | Php 140.00
The Sizzling Tofu is also good. Do not be deceived by the chili on top, it is not hot at all, though you can request from the staff to add a little more spice. It is a must try if you’re a tofu lover. The combination of the dressing, onions and the tofu results to a great dish! A healthy alternative indeed!
Crispy Boneless Tilapia | Php 340.00
Crispy Boneless Tilapia is nugget-size tilapia deep fried until golden brown. It is served with 4 kinds of dip or sauces (spicy vinegar, honey bagoong, sweet and sour sauce, and a combination of soy sauce and vinegar). I tried all the sauces and like the sweet and sour most. The deboned fish is crispy and added for garnish and presentation. The fish is full flavored and crispy yet tender. Serving the fish in nuggets make it more fun to eat, but still I ate some of the fish meat retained in the crispy deboned tilapia.
Blue Marlin Belly | Php 280.00
The Blue Marlin Belly is marinated before it is grilled and presented with a soya glaze. The fish is tender and juicy. The sweetness of the glaze adds sweetness to the dish. Mouthwatering!
Sago at Gulaman & Guinumis | Php 85.00 each
We also tried 2 of my favorite drinks. Just enough sweetness for the Sago't Gulaman though there was too much ice. The Guinumis needs more coconut milk and pinipig.
Mango Sago | Php 75.00
Fried Leche Flan | Php 70.00
I can say that Mesa is on the top of my list when it comes to Filipino cuisine. But I think their desserts need some improvement. The Mango Sago is a far cry from what we were expecting. The Fried Leche Plan seemed interesting so we ordered it to see how the leche flan can be fried. Apparently the it is like "turon" or sweet banana egg rolls that used leche flan as filling and glazed with caramel. Presentation was nice but we can hardly taste the filling, perhaps they could stuff it more so the flavor of the leche flan would stand out.
Overall, food quality at Mesa is just a tat below excellent. Value for money is great and service is great during my experience though I have read some complains from Trip Advisor in their Cebu branch. I highly recommend Mesa for families, barkadas and balikbayans. Probably not for a romantic date since the place is always jam-packed. Again, make sure to reserve in advance. I have dined here three times and ordered the Chicken Binakol, Crispy Boneless Tilapia and Sigarilayas Express everytime. I will definitely come back here and bring my friends to try the other dishes and pig out.
