The Traveling Panda's Exceptional Stay at The Oriental Legazpi

I went to Legazpi, Albay last month with some friends and was excited to learn that we will we staying at The Oriental Legazpi, the only first class hotel in Bicol Region. The hotel is located in Taysan Hill, overlooking the Legazpi cityscape, near the heart of the city. It is far enough to give its guests privacy and relaxation. Oriental Legazpi also boasts of a wonderful and complete view of the majestic Mayon Volcano from foot to foot. And it is the only hotel in the city where you can enjoy the sun rising over the horizon and setting on the same porch. The other side of the hotel offers a view of the mountain range and the vast flora of Albay.

I noticed how elegant the hotel looked the moment we entered. The facade looks amazing as well. It includes a porch with comfortable seats and tables if guests want to relax or dine outdoors. It boasts of glass walls from floor to ceiling that provides good lighting within the hotel's lobby and restaurant. What I like most with the glass wall is that is saves up on energy, which the hotel owners advocate. The bright interiors of the hotel is further enhanced by energy-saving LED lights.

The Oriental Deluxe Room

My roommate and I were given the Deluxe Room. It had two (2) double-sized beds, a built-in closet with an electronic safe, a 32" LCD TV, an executive working desk, a mini bar, a personal refrigerator, and other personal amenities. The room also includes a spacious bathroom that features a rain shower and is separated from the lavatory by a clear glass wall. The hotel provided us with a complete set of toiletries. To top all of these, the room has a veranda that gives a magnificent view of Mt. Mayon. The weather was quite uncooperative during our stay and we didn't really get a good look at the Mayon. Perhaps on our next visit.

Oriental Legazpi offers free WIFI. The internet was really fast at almost 10mbps when I checked the speed.

The Oriental Legazpi has 115 guest rooms and our group was able to take a good look at all the types of room available. Each room had a stylish and modern architecture using glass, metal and modern furnishings on its interiors. We started with the Governor's Suite, which has a sala that gives access to both the connecting rooms and the master's bedroom. On the right side of the master's bedroom is a spacious porch where guests can unwind and enjoy the view of Legazpi. The bathroom has a bathtub separated by a glass wall from the rain shower. The lavatory also features a complete set of toiletries. The other rooms are Executive and Deluxe. They are smaller but spacious and comfortable nonetheless.

Guests have the option to choose rooms with different views. A room that lets you see the majestic Mayon Volcano is priced higher than a room that gives only a view of the mountains.

My friends and I were also fortunate to have tried the hotel's The Spa located at the basement. The Spa at The Oriental has 3 small rooms for individuals and a spacious couple's room, that includes a shower cubicle and jacuzzi. It opens from 10:00AM and closes at 12:00 midnight. You can also have your message in the convenience of your room for a higher rate.

Across the Spa is a fitness and wellness center that features complete and modern equipment to keep guests in top shape even when on vacation.

The Oriental Legazpi Lobby

The hotel has a vast Lobby Lounge. It has a seating capacity of 162 persons and extends to a porch that provides guests a place to chat and have snacks while enjoying the panoramic view of the Legazpi skyline. The Oriental Legazpi also houses a board room, a function hall that can be converted to 2 grand ballrooms to cater to both big and small events. The grand ballroom can accommodate 700 to 1,000 people depending on the setup.

Business travelers would surely enjoy the facilities and amenities of the The Oriental Legazpi. We were lucky to be able to get rooms for that weekend as the hotel is fully booked for the succeeding weeks as they host the attendees of several events including a tourism summit for Bicol region.

Jasmine Restaurant

Across the lobby lounge is the Jasmine Restaurant that can accommodate 117 people and a private room with a seating capacity of 80 persons for exclusive dining. It operates from 6:00AM and closes at 10:00PM. The restaurant serves local cuisines as well as international favorites.

The Infinity Pool is located on the second floor just above the lobby lounge. The pool gives guests a view of the mighty Mayon Volcano towering over the city towards the Albay Gulf on the right side and the mountain horizon on the left side. The hotel also boasts a pool bar that serves a wide range of drinks and dishes. The infinity pool opens at 6:00AM and closes at 8:00PM. If it were not cloudy, we would have witnessed the sun set at Legazpi's horizon.

Our dinner started with Cocido, a stew of malasugue fish with tomatoes, kangkong, and bell pepper. I thought it was Tola (from sutokil, sugba-tola-kilawin) at first, but it has a bit of sour taste similar to Sinigang. Next was Laing Cordon Bleu, a Bicolano rendition of the chicken cordon bleu but using Laing in the middle part. The Bagnet ala Bicol express was served with a Bicol Express sauce along side the Prawn Pinangat which was served with the famous Bicol Pinangat.

Dinner at The Oriental Legazpi

Dinner would not be complete without Utazo having his picture taken. Ensaladang Talong was also added in our Bicolano dinner. Each serving was delicious and everything was consumed down to the last bite. I personally liked the Laing Cordon Bleu the most while Edgar had most of the bagnet since he was allergic to seafoods. The bicol express sauce was a good pair to the bagnet as well. Ramil had most of the prawns while Mervin had a little of everything since he was still stuffed with what we had for a very late lunch.

Dessert at The Oriental Legazpi

For dessert, we had Blueberry Cheesecake, Pili Pannacotta and Mocha Mousse. I liked the Pannacotta of the three desserts, which had the real taste of Pili nuts while I think Ramil had most of the cheesecake since he likes cheesecake if I'm not mistaken. After dessert, we rested for a while before we went to have our massage at The Spa. I was dozing off already when the massage started.

I woke up early the next morning to catch the sun rise but it was still cloudy. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my morning as I feasted on the breakfast buffet being offered at the Jasmine Restaurant. For rice meals, the choices were scrambled egg, bacon, beef tapa, new look danggit and chopsuey. The food was really inviting.

Aside from the rice meals, there was also a Coffee and Juice Station, a Cereal Station, a Bread Station, a Waffle and Omelette Station and a fruits section.

Omelet

I stopped in the Waffle and Omelette Section and asked the cook to prepare an omelette for me. I also asked him to add cheese and milk in my omelette and have the eggs slightly cooked.

I am not really a breakfast person so I opted to get bread and fruits to go along with my omelette. After breakfast, I spent the rest of the early morning on the pool enjoying the magnificent view of the Mayon volcano as well as the cityscape. After a while I got back in my room and took a rest in my very comfortable bed.

I really enjoyed our stay at The Oriental Legazpi and would definitely be staying here again when I'm in Legazpi or Albay.
