Gigantes Escapade

I have wanted to go to Gigantes Island after I saw my travel buddy Ritsi posted pictures of his trip. I planned an itinerary that included attending the Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo, around Bacolod, Guimaras and Carles where Gigantes Island is situated. To cut down on expenses for the trip, I invited some friends for the Gigantes Escapade.

We meet at around 6am. After having La Paz Batchoy, we rented a van from the airport going to Estancia port to cut the travel time and catch some sleep on the 3-hour ride. We had our brunch at Paon Beach Club while we wait for the big boat to bring us to Gigantes Island.

The only trip going to Carles leaves Estancia Port at 2pm. It was still early, we decided to take a private pumpboat so we could pass by Pulupandan Islet. It is inhabited but there are two nipa huts here that fishermen use for resting.

The white soft sand is superb, it made me wonder how much it would cost to buy this islet. It was still early and the water was so inviting that we stayed for a while until it started to rain.

A rainbow greeted us as we approach the main island. We were all mesmerized at the beautiful sight of the rainbow that was from end to end, we were all asking if we would find a pot of gold as we reach Gigantes.

We docked at the other side of the main island to swim around before we proceeded to Gigantes Hideaway Inn.

The town of Asluman or North Gigantes is the scallops capital of Carles, the shores of the island is a growing mountain of scallop shells. At least one member of and each of the family in the community is involved in the scallops and shell business: by gathering shells, taking out the scallops, bringing it to the market selling beautiful and colorful shells to exporters and handicraft makers. As such we were served with scallops cooked in a variety of ways.

We also had fish, squid, seashells which were all fresh. We also had fruits which we bought from Estancia port.

After dinner and a little chitchat, we prepared to rest as we have to wake up at 4AM for the 15-minute habal-habal ride and 30-minute walk to catch the sunrise at theGigantes Parola.

In the next post, I will tell our island hopping adventures. Watch out for it! It will include the things you can do within the Gigantes group of Islands.

  6. Hi Mike, si Mr. Decano din ba contact nyo for private boat transfer? What time kayo umalis ng Estancia. Mas convinient kasi ang private transfer kesa sa public dahil time limit eh di ba kahit pricey sya?.

    1. siya din, syempre mas pricey since you will be renting your own boat. plus yung public boat leaves at 2pm but you have to be there by 12nn then the boat leaves at 8am the following day

  7. Hi Mike! How much would it cost us for the private boat to and from gigantes. There will be only 4 of us but because of the limited time we have, we opt to rent a boat.
